Let's dive into the fascinating history of chatbots, tracing their evolution from simple text-based programs to sophisticated AI assistants, paying close attention to the key advancements that got us here.

Early Days and the Turing Test:

The story begins in 1950 with Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician, and his groundbreaking paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." In it, he proposed the now-famous Turing Test: a way to determine if a machine could exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. This idea laid the foundation for the development of chatbots.

The First Chatbots:

  • ELIZA (1966): Developed by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT, ELIZA was one of the first natural language processing programs. It simulated a Rogerian psychotherapist, using pattern matching and substitution to respond to user inputs.
